Andean Mountain Cat

Andean-Mountain-Cat-pict

Andean Mountain Cat also known as Andean Highland Cat orsimply the Andean Cat, is the rarest cat in America. The Andean Mountain Cat is probably the most attention in the world., He livedin the arid deserts of the high Andes. Given the taxonomic name of the Leopardus Jacobitus, known also as Oreailurus Jacobita, the beautiful cat is often likened to the elusive Snow Leopard owing to similarities in the lifestyle of the two cats. The Andean Cat is nearly two feet long with an approximately one and a half foot tail and stands just over one foot tall at shoulders. Weight is in the range of ten to fifteen pounds.

In adaptation to its high altitude habitat, the cat's coat is long and thick with a base color ranging from gray to reddish brown. Irregular stripes, spots and markings are found on the body, in particular on limbs and the lighter under surface. Tail is long and thick, possibly aiding the cat in its quick movements on rocky cliffs and uncertain terrains. It is banded with dark rings and is light colored at the tip.

Believed to be an opportunistic predator, the Andean Mountain Cat is thought to prey on small animals including chinchillas, viscachas, insects, lizards and birds. Little is known about the social structure and behavior and reproductive profile owing to the extreme rarity of scientific observations of this elusive feline, due to its remote geographical distribution.

The Andean Cat is considered to exist in scattered territories across high altitudes of Andes in dry, rocky and harsh areas in four countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. It has low population densities and lives a solitary life in areas often separated by human settlements. No subspecies are recognized.

Owing to our lack of research data and information, the exact numbers in the wild and conservation status of this beautiful cat are unknown. No specimens exist in captivity. Average lifespan is therefore unestablished. Conservation status is not entirely known however persecution by humans, including killing the cats owing to local superstitions and hunting them for skins and stuffed cats, have led to the classification of the Andean Mountain Cat as endangered!

African Wild Cat

Sunday, November 20, 2011

african wild cat pict

African Wild Cat was smaller than the European cousin, also known as African Desert Cat, the cat is believed to have evolvedas separate species thousands of years ago. Its coloration varies from sandy yellow to gray as it ranges from arid to forested habitats. Body length is around one half to three quarters of a meter with weight ranging from five to fifteen pounds. Fur is short and marked by tabby-like spots and stripes. Tail is somewhat pointed and fur behind the ears has a certain reddish shade.

Primarily a nocturnal hunter, crepuscular activity is often recorded in territories uninhabited by humans. Hunting is through the stalk and ambush method. Small mammals including rodents and mice are generally taken, along with reptiles, insects and birds. Males are territorial and protective of their domain, that often includes ranges of a number of females.

Highly adaptable, the wild cat, Felis Silvestris Lybica, is seen in a variety of habitats including bush country and plains. The geographical range includes large parts of Africa excluding the rainforests of Central Africa and some of the extreme regions of the Sahara desert. It is also recorded in certain coastal areas of the Middle East. A number of subspecies (ten to fifteen) are recognized but owing to the considerable similarities amongst them, the classification system is widely disputed by scientists.

Litter size of the African Wild Cat ranges from two to six babies, with three being the norm. Pregnancy lasts around two months and conception is often timed so that the kittens are born in the rainy season when food supply is plentiful. Independence is reached at six months and sexual maturity at twice that age.

Like other wild cats, the principal threat to this beautiful feline is from hybridizing with feral and domestic cats. Conservation strategies include breeding programs for maintenance of the pure gene pool at least in captivity (with future aims at reintroduction in the wild) and management of feral cat populations in the wild.

African Golden Cat

African-Golden-Cat-pict

African Golden Cat is a medium of wild cats, and cats are covered equatorial Africa. Profelis Aurata, the cat is believed to be closely related to the Caracal and Serval, though it is often termed as the Leopard's Brother owing to the co-existence of the two cats in certain parts of their range. Body length is usually around two and a half feet with a longish one foot tail. Adults reach a shoulder height of about five feet, weighing between 20-40 pounds. Men greater than women.

Strong and secretive felines, the African Golden Cats are crepascular in their activity profile. They often spend the day resting in tree branches. Hunting is primarily through the stalk and ambush method. Small animals including rodents, tree hydraxes and birds are usually taken, though reports of the cat preying on small antelopes, monkeys and hog have also emerged. In areas where human settlements are next to national parks, domestic livestock and poultry are also reported to be consumed by the cats.

Coloration of the African Golden Cat varies across its range from reddish brown to silver gray. Melanistic variants have also been recorded. It is even suggested that the fur may change color in a single individual over time and external influences. Head and body are often spotted whereas the underside is usually white. Tail is lined at its origin and ends in a black or brown tip. Head and ears are small and rounded. Legs are longish with somewhat oversized paws.

Residing in parts of Central and West Africa, the cats seem to prefer tropical rainforests with dense undergrowth. Two subspecies are recognized, based upon the African Golden Cat's distribution:

Profelis Aurata Aurata - Uganda to Congo
Profelis Aurata Celidogaster - West Africa

Little is known about the exact behaviour patterns of the African Golden Cat owing to its reclusive lifestyle and limited research on it. Still it is believed to be a largely solitary feline. Males are thought to take an active part in parenting though. Gestation period is around two and a half months after which one to three kittens are born. The young grow quickly and gain maturity at one and a half years of age.

Cystitis in Cats

cystitis in cats pict

What is feline cystitis?

Cystitis is a bladder irritant. Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (Idiopathic means no known cause) is very common in cats. That's just one of the disorders that come under the heading of FLUTD. 'Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorders'.

What are symptoms of Cystitis in Cats?

* Cat narrowed to urinate
* Increased frequency of urination cat
* Cat may stop using the litter box
* There is blood in cat urine. Urine may have a pink tinge to it
* The paint was excessive licking the genital area
* Cat urinating in unusual places like in a bathtub, in the hand basin, on the kitchen bench, floor, in bed or on the kitchen floor
* Cat tries to urinate but only through a few drops
* She may cry when passing urine. Ouch! It hurts.

What is the treatment for Cystitis in Cats?

Your vet may prescribe antibiotics. Even though bacteria are rare, some antibiotics have anti-inflammatory or analgesic (pain relieving) effects. Other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as steroids, are occasionally used when there is severe inflammation.

Why does my cat pee all over the house

We really don't know what is going on in your cat's mind but it is believed that the cat may associate the pain of urination with his litter tray or his usual place of urination and so he/she seeks other places which he thinks may not hurt so much. Another theory is that your cat may seek cool places such as bath tubs and tiles because of the burning sensation he is feeling.

Give your Cat a Chance

Did you know that one of the top ten reasons why people surrender their cats to shelters is because of inappropriate urination problems? Before you throw up you hands in despair, give your cat a chance and take her/him to the vet to rule out Feline Cystitis.

Tiffanie (Longhaired Burmilla) Cat Breed Profile

Sunday, July 17, 2011

tiffanie-cat-pict

Longhaired Burmilla History

The longhaired Burmilla is an elegant and beautiful cat that was developed from shorthair Burmilla program. Starting with the marriage between the Burmese and Chinchilla accident in England. For maintenance is relatively easy, with a silver coat and a combination of a pleasant personality.

The breed was developed by using the naturally occurring longhairs that came through the shorthair programme, and by crossing back to Chinchilla in the early generations.

Called an Australian Tiffanie in the early days, the breed is now developing more in line with the Burmilla programme and in most of the major groups in Australia it is referred to as the Burmilla Longhair. This has encouraged breeders to keep the breed type truer to the Burmilla standard and benefits the breed by using the larger gene pool available in the shorthair programme.

Longhaired Burmilla Personality

The longhair Burmilla is bright and funloving, but more laid back than its shorthair relative in most cases. It is an ideal cat for single people or families, being quite happy to wait until you come home for attention. They are not a demanding cat, but still love to spend as much time with you as possible.

Longhaired Burmilla Appearance

In Australia, the breed has developed with an emphasis on the quality of the silver pattern being very important. Ideally the coat should have a silver base with a band of colour on the end of the strand of hair. A deeper proportion of colour on the hair strand results in a shaded coat rather than the pale effect of a tipped (Chinchilla) pattern. It is most important that this pattern be evenly distributed over the coat and that there be no tarnishing of the silver – called ‘rufussing’ it appears as areas of reddish colour marring the silver. The colour of the tips should reflect the colours of the cats allowable in the programme – black, brown, chocolate, blue and lilac with the red, cream and tortoiseshell colours allowable under the ACF Burmilla standard, as they are in Europe. The longhair coat should be a fine and silky coat, medium long, except over the shoulders and without a woolly undercoat. Ear tufts and furnishings are preferable.

Tonkinese Cat Breed Profile

Sunday, July 3, 2011

tonkinese-cat-pict

Tonkinese Personality

Tonkinese cats and breed has been around long enough in Australia. But only now becoming so popular.

Why now Tonkinese so popular? First, the Tonkinese personality is unique. A cat that will retrieve things for you, run and meet you at the front door when you get home from work, insist on sitting on your lap or the most comfortable position, a cat that not only gets along with dogs but has them wrapped around their little claws, can be taken for walks on a lead, are all characteristics of a fantastic breed.

Tonkinese Appearance

The look of the Tonkinese also draws many people in. It is a medium between the svelte elegance of the Siamese and the cobby boldness of the Burmese.

The mink, although not unique to the Tonkinese, is certainly an outstanding feature. The incomplete dominance of the Siamese and the Burmese colour gene creates a stunning look, when added to the aqua marine eyes.

But wait - there's more. The Tonkinese comes in Siamese and Burmese coat types as well. Many Tonk lovers choose a Tonk rather than the Siamese or Burmese because they don't like the extremes both breeds can become. For example, many kitten buyers choose a colourpoint because they had a Siamese many years ago when they were much rounder in the face. Some Tonk buyers choose a solid coat type because they don't like the face too short, combined with the stunning green colour that solid coat Tonkinese have.

Tonkinese Colours
tonkinese cat pictThe Tonkinese come in 4 basic colours:-
Seal - dark brown
Blue - grey
Chocolate - ruddy brown
Lilac - a soft mushroom colour

(Added to this, the Tonkinese now come in Red, Tabby and Tortie coats as well. As you can see, we have a cat for just about everyone.

The Tonkinese in the last few years have become recognised by the major Cat Councils. As a result, there are more breeders producing cats which are now eligible for Championship status. Being shown brings them into the public eye, as does appearing on programs such as Burke's Backyard, Totally Wild and Harry's Practice.

When you put all these factors together, you end up with a stunning cat, with a fantastic personality that stands above all others. Why wouldn't they be popular?

Toyger Cat Breed Profile

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

toyger-cat-pict

Toyger History

The Toyger is the result of crosses between striped domestic short hair cat and Standard Bengal Tabby, this produces a cat with striped fur pattern that resembles a small tiger.

The Toyger is a designer breed and currently still being developed. Breeder's are striving to give this stunning breed the true look of a mini tiger over the coming years. Many of the features proposed have never been seen in a domestic cat. Progress is slow but steady and it could be several years before the Toyger truly resembles the wild tiger although the founder is aiming at 2010. Judy Sugden says that with a few more years of breeding, her Toygers will look even more like the real thing, with ears that are shorter, smaller eyes, a bigger chin and a wider nose tip.

Toyger Personality

toyger cat-1 pict The Toyger have a relaxed temperament and is a cat with a good personality. They are athletic and love to be around people. They are very suitable for most households and get on well with children and other pets. Many Toygers enjoy playing with water much like their wild cousins, tigers, who are strong swimmers and enjoy bathing in rivers, lakes and waterholes. Toygers are intelligent and are easily trained.

Toyger Appearance and Colours

Toyger's are of medium size with a strong and robust torso. The tail is long and muscular and set and carried low. Toyger's coats are short, thick, plush, soft and feel extremely luxurious.

The ideal colouring for a Toyger is an orange/tan background with dark stripes like that of a Tiger. The stripes are actually long rosettes and should not be uniform like a mackerel pattern but more like long random individual stripes. The coat must be striped with no spotting. The ears small and rounded, good solid bone structure and overall balance.

The Toyger is an ongoing venture with each generation improving on the last to obtain the objective of a beautiful domestic cat with the look of the majestic wild Tiger.

The Toyger has no tiger blood in it but does possess genes passed on from the Asian Leopard cat.

Siamese Cat Breed Profile

siamese-cat-pict

Siamese Cat History

Although there have been many theories about the origin of the Siamese cat, it is now quite certain that it was a well loved variety in the ancient Siamese city of Ayudha. Ayudha was founded in 1350 and was Siam's capital until fire destroyed the city during the Burmese invasion in 1767.

In the National Library, in the present day capital of Bangkok, there are manuscripts from Ayudha that provide a record of native cats, describing them as having black tails, feet and ears with a white body and blue eyes which reflect a reddish glow at night because it is part albino. The Siamese Cat's eyes are a brilliant sapphire blue. The original Siamese cats in Siam lived in temples where they were closely guarded to keep the breed pure. So highly were they regarded that there ownership is said to have been restricted to members of the Royal family. Only if a man was promoted to a knight or nobleman could he possess that cat with, as they believed, "special powers."

Many Siamese cats from Thailand had a kink in their tails but over the years this trait has been considered to be a flaw and breeders have largely eradicated it, although it persists among street cats in Thailand. Many early Siamese were cross-eyed to compensate for the abnormal uncrossed wiring of the optic chiasm, which is produced by the same albino allele that produces colored points. Like the kinked tails, the crossed eyes have been seen as a fault and through selective breeding, the trait is far less common today.

Siamese Point Colors

The point colors are the color of the face, ears, tail and feet. Siamese point colors can be Seal, Chocolate, Blue, Lilac, Cinnamon, Fawn, Red, Cream, Apricot or Caramel. The points can also be Tortie (Tortoiseshell) and Tabby (or Lynx).

Siamese Personality

Siamese cats are a very intelligent, lively, entertaining cat. They can be very demanding and become totally involved in their owner's life. Siamese do not like to be ignored and always have to be the centre of attention. They usually regard themselves as people rather than cats. You will never be bored if you own a Siamese cat.

siamese cat pictSiamese cats have a strong personality and are usually very talkative, often with a loud voice. The Siamese voice is quite legendry and they use it well to communicate with humans. Their meow has been compared to the cries of a human baby. They enjoy being with people and have a great need for human companionship. Siamese cats are sometimes described as extroverts. Often they bond strongly to a single person.

Siamese cats are very affectionate and spoiled, entertaining and really the right pet.. They are very loyal and loving. These cats are typically active and playful, even as adults.

They are energetic cat. Whatever activity you are engaged in you can be sure that your Siamese cat will be always there helping you out.

Selkirk Rex History

Selkirk Rex This breed with the characteristic curly fur coat, was first discovered in the United States in 1987. A worker in an animal shelter noticed a cat with a unique curly coat and gave her to a Persian breeder named Jeri Newman. That cat named Miss DePesto was bred to a Persian and her first litter contained 3 straight coated kittens and 3 kittens with this unique soft curly coat. The curly kittens were bred to Persian, British and Exotics to develop the Selkirk Rex lines.

Selkirk Rex Personality

Scottish Fold Cat Breed Profile

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

scottish fold cat pict

Scottish Fold History

In 1961 a man named William Ross citizens of Scotland saw a white cat named Susie with folded ears. William and his wife Mary obtained a white female kitten from Susie's next litter which also had folded ears. They named the kitten Snooks and all Scottish folds of today can trace their pedigrees to her.

Scottish Fold Appearance
A characteristic that can you notice about the Scottish Fold cat is that the ear folded forward and downward.

The Scottish Fold is a very unique and delightful cat with a sweet temperament. They require minimal care to maintain health and vigour. The Fold has developed a look all it's own, being a medium cat with a rounded, well-padded body and a soft, dense coat. The eyes are round, broadly spaced, giving an innocent and sweet expression.

Scottish Fold Colours
Scottish Folds come in a large spectrum of colours. You will find Scottish Folds come in just about every colour that a cat can come in. Bi-colours, parti, solid and tabby.

Scottish Fold Personality
scottish fold cat pict
Scottish Folds are a very friendly and docile cat. Their large round eyes and folded ears, coupled with expressive looks, intelligence and inquisitive nature make them a wonderful extension to the family home. Folds are not very vocal. Scottish Folds have very tiny "meows". The breed is very good with children, and can adapt to almost any situation. Scottish Folds also make friends readily with other cats.

Scottish Folds are hardy cats, with a disposition that matches their sweet expression. They are a treasure to own and will provide the family with lots of love and entertainment for many years.

Scottish Fold Information
Scottish Fold kittens are not born with folded ears but by about three to four weeks of age the ears begin to fold. There are degrees of folding, usually described as a single, double, or triple fold.

Not all Scottish Fold kittens to a litter will be born with folded ears. Most breeders use a straight eared cat usually the British Shorthair as an outcross and therefore some of the kittens in the litter will have straight ears and some will have folded ears. The straight eared kittens are known as Scottish Shorthairs.

The folding of the ears occurs on a gene that affects the development of the spine, which is why two Scottish Folds should never be bred, as the resulting kittens could be born with spinal and leg deformities. Early in the development of this breed a degenerative joint disease was discovered to be linked with breeding folded-eared cats to folded-eared cats. Because of this, ethical breeders will only breed straight-eared cats to folded- eared cats. Scottish Folds who are the products of folded-ear to straight-ear breedings seldom if ever develop joint disease.

Burmilla Cat Breed Profile

Sunday, April 17, 2011

burmilla cat pict

Burmilla History

The Burmilla breed is a relatively new cat breed originating in the UK in the 1980s. True to its name, the Burmilla cat breed is a cross between the Burmese and the Chinchilla Persian cat breeds. In fact, the breed originated accidentally, when a purebred Burmese and a purebred Chinchilla Persian found each other and produced a litter of kittens. Rather than cry over their bad luck, the breeders decided to start a new breed based on that litter. The breed standard for the Burmillas was written in 1984, and the breed gained "Championship" status (essentially full-fledged membership) in the UK's cat fancy associations. The breed has also been embraced by cat breeders' groups in Australia and Canada, but not the US.

Burmilla Coat Type and Colours

The Burmilla is a beautiful cat of medium foreign type, showing striking contrast between coloured Shading/Tipping and Silver undercoat with delicate tracings of Tabby markings on the head, legs and tail. There should be a distinctive M mark on the forehead.

The Burmilla's eyes are the stunning feature of this cat. They can be any shade of green with dark penciling on the lids which makes it look like the cat is wearing eyeliner.

The Burmilla come in 5 colours Chocolate, Brown, Blue, Lilac and Black The coat is either shaded or tipped.
and all have a silver white undercoat.

The nose is brick red, also with a dark outline. At birth, Burmilla kittens can be very dark, some with distinct tabby markings which disappear very quickly on the body, or almost white, in which case the colour starts appearing within a few days. They have a dense coat with a feeling of raw silk at the tips. They also come in a variety of colours and coat patterns from solid, tabby (ticked, classic, etc) or smoke. Burmillas come in both short and semi long hair inheriting genes from both the Burmese (shorthair) and Chinchilla (longhair) parentage.

Burmilla Personality

The Burmilla has elements of both the Burmese and Chinchilla Persian cat breeds. The Burmilla is an outgoing, friendly and sociable cat that has inherited slightly modified characteristics from both of the original parents; it is not as noisy nor demanding as the Burmese, but is more adventurous and inquisitive than the Chinchilla
The Burmilla is set to become increasingly more popular because of its good looks and extremely good nature.

Burmillas are great with children. Combined with their low maintenance and wonderful disposition they make an ideal family pet.
