When Anastasia Pollack’s husband permanently cashes in his chips at a roulette table in Vegas, her comfortable middle-class life craps out. She’s left with two teenage sons, a mountain of debt, and her hateful, cane-wielding Communist mother-in-law. Not to mention stunned disbelief over her late husband’s secret gambling addiction, and the loan shark who’s demanding fifty thousand dollars.

Anastasia’s job as crafts editor at American Woman magazine proves no respite when she discovers a dead body glued to her desk chair. The victim, fashion editor Marlys Vandenburg, collected enemies and ex-lovers like Jimmy Choos on her ruthless climb to editor-in-chief. But when evidence surfaces of an illicit affair between Marlys and Anastasia’s husband, Anastasia becomes the prime suspect.

Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery Book 1 edition by Lois Winston Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This is a rollicking read with a mass of quirky characters that are well defined with some extreme, and humorous, interactions. A typical cozy mystery based in the crafting world, this book will delight those who thrive on this genre but loses out slightly to a more mainstream audience. It's not that the crafting intervenes in the plot, as it can with a lesser writer, but more that the characters are, at times, too over the top and distracting.

Heroine Anastasia Pollack faces the personal, financial and career crises that are almost required for this type of book, and the financial and career issues are well done, quite believable and place plenty of pressure on Anastasia. But the personal issues, centering around a chaotic home life with diametrically opposed mother and mother-in-law, is a situation the reader can find hard to believe in even a dysfunctional family.

The plot has the requisite twists and turns, but may rely a little too much on happenstance and too little on the efforts of the characters or their motivation. If the reader can suspend disbelief through the family situation though, the rest of the story makes for good read in a tub full of bubbles.

Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery Book 1 edition by Lois Winston Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I love a good cosy novel to curl up and take me away to another world and this novel didn't disappoint. With a wry sense of humour and wacky, fun characters, Ms. Winston introduces you to the character of Anastasia Pollack and her mad cap family who all live with her. Her mother who collects husbands because they all die on her, and her Mother in law who spouts communists views and blames everything on people being anti- communist including her husband's disappearance when her son was a child. Her two teenage son aren't much help around the house as most young men aren't. and poor Anastasia is facing financial ruin because of her recently deceased husband. Her husband dropped dead while gambling all their money away, and their teenage son's college funds. If that wasn't bad enough Anastasia finds her boss murdered in her office and it looks like someone has set her up for the fall. Then she starts getting calls from someone threatening her life and those of her children of she doesn't pay the 50g's her husband owes. I won't tell you anymore of the story but this book is delight from start to finish. Bits of humour and great writing makes this a cosy you'll love to read.
I had picked it because I have suffered enough burns from my own glue gun to believe that they could easily enough be deadly.

Anastasia is having a really rough month. Her cranky communist mother-in-law moves in along with her equally hard to get along with pooch. Her husband suffers a heart attack and leaves her a widow. Her step-father suffers from an aneurysm leaving her mother a widow, again. Her mother joins the household, along with her pampered cat. With 2 mothers, their pets, Anastasia's Shakespeare quoting African Grey, and 2 teenage boys all stuffed into a 3 bedroom house things are just starting to get interesting. That's when Anastasia discovers an unpopular co-worker murdered in her very own cubicle.

Anastasia's rapid fire wit and humorous sarcasm adds much to the dark and twisty plot. There is no lack of suspects, new ones uncovered at every turn. The one thing that annoyed me was the fact that while Anastasia seemed to be at the top of the police's list of suspects, she had an alibi that she seemingly didn't bother to mention to them. Of course it wouldn't be much of a story if she wasn't trying to solve the case to clear her own name.

Great story, fun to read, incredibly fast paced page turner. Definitely a must read for crafty people who like murder mysteries as there are also craft instructions given for several projects based on the articles Anastasia writes as craft editor for a woman's magazine.
Recently I discovered another New Jersey treasure, Anastasia Pollack, the protagonist in Lois Winston's Crafting Mystery Series. Anastasia is the crafts editor for American Woman, a New Jersey magazine. On the surface, she sounds like an average American career woman with an average American family, living the average American life. That image is quickly shattered on chapter one when I, and Anastasia, discover her husband has just dropped dead in the casino at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. What makes this a real shocker is that husband Karl was supposed to be at a business meeting in Pennsylvania instead of gambling away the family's last dollar.
Anastasia is not only penniless; she is left with two teenage sons who now have little chance to go to college; a Communist live-in mother-in-law who despises her; and a loan shark who is threatening to kill her and her family if she doesn't fork over the cash owed to him by Karl, the dead husband. Just when you think her life can't get worse, she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a fellow colleague who was killed in Anastasia's office at the magazine.
Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun, is the first book in Winston's series. The story is lighthearted, fast-paced, and despite the maddeningly frightful circumstances, which surround Anastasia, humorous.
I've been on a quest this year to find new mystery writers I can add to my must-read list. The Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery Series is right there at the top of my list.
