“Your call is very important to us . . .”
Interior decorator Laura Howard is receiving messages from her husband on her telephone answering machine. It’s his voice all right. But his ashes are in the urn on Laura’s fireplace mantel. . . Now wealthy from her husband’s life insurance benefits, Laura tries to put her life in order. She strains to keep her sense of humor and sanity as vandals destroy her car and burglars ransack her house. Is it the final straw when the new resident of the home she shared with her late husband is killed on the very designer tile Laura selected for the entryway?
All this—plus mysterious and threatening messages from her cheating, lying, no-good husband—begins to push the ever-tasteful Laura to that tacky place known as despair.
Oregon Detective Chris Pfeifer has everyone including Laura on his suspect list while Laura has everyone including Detective Pfeifer on her dinner date list. Between decorating gigs, Laura and her co-workers – a cantankerous retiree and a handsome young contractor – assist Detective Pfeifer as he unravels the truth behind the bizarre twists in Laura’s life.

Hammered Nailed and Screwed A Designer Mystery Book 1 edition by Kathleen Hering Romance eBooks Reviews
I found "Hammered, Nailed and Screwed" a delightful, light approach to grief management. There were helpful hints about starting a new season of living. There were offerings of "Co-Worker Romance" wisdom. And half serious decorating tips were in there too.
That is a lot to find in a Murder Mystery! Oh Yes, there was murder, plotting, deceipt, betrayal, and there was even a little more!
This is a good beginning for Kathleen Hering's first book. I hope you check this book out. With a great title like this, how could you not?

I tried this book because of the title and the plot sounded interesting... not the same old same old... and I was not disappointed. The mystery is interesting and enjoyable without being painfully suspenseful. I didn't figure it out until the end, but I liked the characters along the way. For me, though, what made it stand out was the authenticity of the setting. It's set in Oregon, in different parts of Portland, the coast, and the valley, and everywhere she goes rings true. As an Oregonian who has lived elsewhere, I have come to be sensitive to what is special about Oregon, and the character of the places the heroine goes always feels authentic, with the right touches. A little exaggerated at times, maybe, for humorous effect, but always real.
I am looking forward to her next novel!

This was such an excellent story. I loved the formatting, the way the characters and the story itself came together. Very intuitive of the author in the way she brought them all together and lined the plot up. It was funny, suspenseful too with just the right amount of hints to the romance beginning with a couple of lead characters, not full of too much description which was enjoyable for a change. The story itself was just exceptional I thought. I don't remember any grammatical errors or distinct omissions of facts, that sort of thing. A good job. I will highly recommend this book to anyone. I had to read it straight through as it was that good.
The story is about a widowed interior decorator working for a construction company. She was healing from not only the murder of her husband but also his indiscretions. About a year later, she's carved out a nice life for herself when she begins receiving calls--from her deceased husband! It has an interesting & satisfying ending. There are 3 books now & I'm reading the second one. I plan to purchase the 3rd, too. I get distracted when there are a lot of typos, improper word usage or misspelled words but there weren't any! I know the part of Oregon Ms. Hering describes & her info is accurate. I enjoyed the characters; I thought they were well--rounded. Decorating advice was included at the end of each chapter, too. A cute touch that gives credibility to the main character's work experience. I really enjoyed this book & if you want to read a chick lit mystery, this is it.
While the book was interesting it suffered from a few significant flaws.
One there was a real continuity problems. Time frames were hazy and the story tended to jump around.
Two the book was constantly shifting voice. Some times it was the main character sometimes the supporting characters and even sometimes even the antagonist. When writing as the main character for the first part of book she had little imaginary news tickers. She gave that up toward the end of the book (not complaining I preferred the character with out the news ticker). She either forgot she was doing it or forgot to go back and edit out in first of book when she ran out of ideas for the ticker. Third every chapter ended with a decorating tip that may or may not have related to the chapter. I get the main character is a decorator but the tip thing was after a while annoying. Shift it to the back like other authors. Finally there was the detective who at the middle of the book was suddenly promoted to the position he had since the beginning of the book. Huh! So up to that point he was just playing detective? Along that line several characters suddenly develop traits that are necessary to solve the mystery.
Finally is the fact that every man she meets hits on her. Since she professes to be a wallflower that doesn't really ring very true.
The mystery itself is fine and if you are ok with the problems listed above it isn't a horrible read. I picked it up looking for something like Jennie Bentley or Sarah Grave's books.
This is this authors first book and I will probably spring for the second in the series (there are only two so far) to see if she improves. While some can write well in "pantser" mode others should work with a carefully outlined plot to avoid the continuity issue. She is not a "pantser" Some good ideas she just needs that plot outline. If you tend to read in small bits the continuity might not be as noticeable as to someone who reads a book in one or two sittings. An avid reader who is known to go thru as many as three books in a day and cursed with a better than average memory the continuity thing was a bit irritating to me. Not enough however to make me not finish the book.
